The following is the result of some spelunking through this. Web-based clients can present a unique security issue whererestrictions on software. Chatting with one of Googles Trillian team, I was encouraged to explore Trillians Map Mode. These clients are usually capable of very limited functionality, such as sending text messages. These clients areoften used only when a user is unable to install a full-featured client on a system, possibly dueto restrictions on a workstation. Web-based clients are not very popular due to their limited feature set. The popularity of GMail may translate into millions of users for Google s instant messagingclient. This instant messaging client is interestingbecause of Google s huge popularity and the fact that a GMail account is required to access GoogleTalk. Google Talk handles only two functions, text messaging and voice over IP (VoIP).This instant messaging client is in beta (as of September 2005) and its features and architecturemay change before it reaches its finalized version. At the time of this writing, GoogleTalk s features are minimal compared to competitors, with none of the advanced tools that are nowstandard on other competing clients such as file transfers, video conferencing, or integration withportal features. Google Talk is a fairly basic instant messaging client. As of August 2005, Trillian has been downloaded23,982,735 times according to CNet s (). Trillian, available at, is one of the most popularof these clients for Windows-based workstations, and is full featured and includes the feature offree, built-in encryption for messaging sessions. Overall this is a great application I will continue to use happily. There are manythird-party instant messaging clients that have the capability to connect to multiple services suchas AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), Yahoo! and MSN without needing to install the service s dedicatedclients. I like how I can save resources by running one messenger client and how there is not bloat hurting your application or PC performance. I have used this messanger on the Mac and on the Windows PC and I love the consistency and stability it brings. Over all I have been a huge fan of this application on the desktop and on the mobile application side. The amount of features present in the paid version is not huge, but there are some notable services that might be beneficial to some users. There following the same structure that app developers are following on the mobile market with free apps versus paid app. I do like their catchphrase “Skip a coffee this month and get started!”. Trillian Pro looks like a cheap purchase of only $12 dollars a year with added features. Trillian has definitely broadened their development horizons by making their software available for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android, Blackberry and Web / Cloud Client. Then later incorporated several other IM protocols such as Google Talk, Skype, Facebook Chat and many more. Once set up, the Trillian Pro 2.012 client lists all of your online buddies alphabetically in a single console, with a coloured dot next to their names indicating which service they belong to. The applications integrates into Twitter and Facebook with alerts and checks both POP3 and IMAP e-mail.ĭeveloped by Cerulean Studios, the software has been around since late 2002 it was designed to be the alternative to Windows Live Messenger. Trillian is the all in one application for chating with friends from Google, Skype, Facebook, AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and IRC.
